Fourth-oldest club in the competition. Four premierships. A history built less on expectation and more on the refusal to be absorbed, relocated, or quietly forgotten.

Founded in 1869 in the inner-north suburb of North Melbourne, the club drew its earliest players from the abattoir workers of the Hotham district - men who boned shins for a living. The nickname Shinboner stuck, and so did the ethos. North spent its first half-century outside the VFL's top tier entirely, only gaining admission in 1925. The waiting made them hard. Under Ron Barassi in the 1970s, the club built a system rooted in fitness, pressure, and relentless running: winning back-to-back flags in 1975 and 1977 and announcing that working-class clubs could be great clubs. The 1990s added two more in 1996 and 1999. Off the field the story is messier: merger threats, a failed national expansion as the Kangaroos, financial strain - but the club kept coming back to Arden Street. It always does.

Some clubs were moved north. This club refused to go.
